Ever notice how hard it is to make good, healthy food while on a very, very strict budget? Yeah, me too. Both my partner and I have extremely tight wallets, but we love our food … and even more, we love good, healthy food.
So, I’ve decided to do some research. And it all started with a book. A book by Antoni Porowski – Antoni in the Kitchen, to be precise. I’ve loved him since first seeing him in Queer Eye. He’s a fellow Canadian, and as I have discovered lately, his family and my family were close in countries. His is from Poland, and mine is from the Ukraine.
I’ve been researching a lot about my family lately, as I had thought I had roots in Belarus, or Germany. But thanks to my Auntie Joyce, she discovered we are actually from Volhynia Ukraine. So there will be more research done there, mark my words.
Anyhow, I’ve decided to see about researching how to make traditional good and healthy Ukrainian food on less than a shoestring budget. Yes, I will still be yarning, but I do want to see about helping people find good food for good money.
I will be starting this new research in June, when I’m back from a trip with my Mum. So look for the tag: good food, healthy food, fun food. You’ll not miss any posts from there.
I’m rather looking forward to this upcoming weekend. Saturday is game day, and I get to forget the world for a little while. I’ve played Dungeons and Dragons for more than 30 years now (Himself got me into it when we were dating – a few years before we wed. So in all honesty, probably closer to 35 now), and this campaign is a fun one.
Sunday, oh Sunday cannot come fast enough. Sunday I get to meet up with Duchess Helene (her SCA name) at a Fibre Fest a couple of towns over, and finally learn to spin. I’ve been looking forward to this for a while now, and I am almost to the point of not being able to sleep, I’m so excited.
My sweater is coming along again, I cast it on a couple of days ago, but have only done the repeat for the yoke twice now. I think tomorrow I will setting in for knitting after the game session ends.
The trip my mum and I are going on is looming closer and closer. She’s totally excited, whereas I will get there when I start to pack. I have some summer clothes coming I’ve purchased, which are still on the way. OK …. I think I lied. I’m starting to really look forward to this!
Welp, I learned a painful lesson with my sweater. I didn’t do a gauge swatch for my sweater. My gauge was off … not by much … but enough that I might have to change needle size. That and I dropped a stitch three inches from the row I was currently on. In the increase.
My forehead hurts for the amount of times I “headdesked” over my hubris.
Lesson learned. Started a journal, which will hold the pattern name, when I started it, the yarn, the needles, THE GAUGE, and any notes (for the pattern changes, etc) and room for a photo when it’s done.
Truth be told, I realized it last night, and it took me until about 4:30pm today to actually buckle up and frog it. Let’s all have a moment of silence for the “Not the Boyfriend Sweater”, and a small cheer of encouragement for the “Not the Boyfriend Sweater 2.0”.
Ugh. But, yarn ready, needles casted on, and elbows up. Let’s do this.
So I’ve decided to take the plunge and knit myself a sweater. Since it’s for me, and not a significant other, I’m safe from the Boyfriend Curse.
I chose the Chole Cardigan from the Lions Brand website, and the Medium Purple yarn from Red Heart. And so far I’m really enjoying the process. Won’t say much more than I love it. It’s my favourite colour, and since this sweater has no buttons, I can use one of my new shawl pins to fasten it closed.
The cast on was quite simple, and I took a shortcut by adding the stitch markers as I cast on. This yarn works up so smoothly and is quite soft for an acrylic. The cat has come to sniff it out already, and I have her seal of approval.
For me, it’s knitting up quite quickly. This is the day’s progress, after starting it this afternoon and going out for dinner with Mum for a couple of hours. Once the weekly D&D game is over tomorrow, we shall see where we’re at.
In more exciting news (I know I know … nothing is more exciting that my knitting my first For-Me-Wearable, but trust me … this is cool to!), I’ve finally set up my teaching Facebook page, Instagram and YouTube page. Even have an email address for it! After some discussion with Himself, we chose the name: “It’s Knot Impossible”. So look for me on Facebook, Instagram, X (ew), Threads and Bluesky. I’ll be posting when I post my YouTube video classes.
But, it’s late now, and I should go to bed, as game starts early tomorrow (like before ten early) Good night all, and happy, yarnie, dreams!
How is it, that it’s the end of March already? It feels like just yesterday, it was March 8th. It’s a wee bit creepy, to me. In three days (probably two by the time this gets published), it will be my 2nd Stroke-aversary. Two years since I was laid up by a bilateral ischemic stroke. What a nightmare that was. I am so very glad my brain survived as much as it has. I will never be the hardcore researcher and student I was, but I can still do things. One at a time, mind you, but still. I can still knit, crochet and sew. I can still read, and type. But these have taken a serious set back … I can no longer type at over 100 words a minute, and it now takes me three times as long to do things, but I am still doing it.
That being said, I’m coming along quite nicely with the shawl I’m making for a friend. I am just LOVING it. It’s a very simple garter stitch shawl, but with the yarn I’ve chosen, it’s looking splendid. I’ll post a colour photo of it once the recipient gets it.
Now, I’m looking at crocheting myself a cardigan vest. This is going to be a duster style, as sleeves are bullshit (yes, I did blatantly steal that from Marisha Ray from Critical Role, she’s completely right). It’s going to be a stunning dusty purple colour, and since it’s for me, once it’s started, I’ll post a photo.
I’m hoping to have this duster finished by May, and the start of Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Pithy Shawl (that’s her travel shawl from the July chapter of her book The Knitter’s Almanac.) Since May is an international travel month, I’ve decided that May will now be July, and July will now be May. Thankfully, May is a small project month, so it all works out.
So, my dear readers … what are your travel plans this summer? Will your crafting go with you? I’m looking forward to hearing about it!
Today, I was lucky enough to go to Fibres West 2025 with two very dear friends. Didn’t get many photos – read: I only took one photo, as I was too busy shopping and seeing friends I hadn’t seen in a long time.
One of my high school friends has a sister who owns her own yarn store up north, and she was there today, along with my friend. I spent a fair amount at her stall, and now have the beautiful yarn for my travel shawl per Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Travel Shawl.
I’m working my way through The Knitter’s Almanac, and in May I will be doing two long plane rides. Her Travel Shawl for July fits the bill for my knitting quite nicely. So, I’m making July’s project in May, and May’s in July.
But, since it’s almost midnight right now, and it’s been a long day of walking and peopling. Tomorrow, I’ll be knitting and relaxing all day. My body will be so stiff LOL
Welp … as much as I have tried to keep up with my blogging, and I do remind myself a lot about doing this, I’ve let a long time pass. So, here is a post to let you all know what I’ve been up to:
February was an interesting month. Started new things, and finished a few too. The biggest thing was the start of my new craft area. Since my strokes, I’ve let a few things fall by the wayside, and unfortunately, this means my dedicated space ended up being a “storage” area. Yes, 99% of it actually IS craft stuff, but I want to be able to sit and sew when the urge strikes, and not clean up everything so I can actually sew.
As you can see, I have two dolls for which I’m going to crochet and knit an outfit each for the upcoming Chilliwack Fair in August. I want to get a third so I can sew an outfit as well. This year, it’s just going to be doll clothes. My brain is still healing and I don’t want to over-exert myself to the point where I can’t do anything due to exhaustion.
I got a subscription box for knitting, and finished one of the projects in the box. I’m totally in love with the cup cozy I made, and it now lives in my EDC bag so I don’t have to use the cardboard cup cozies from the shops. One of these days I will make a cup cozy that fits around my usual metal to go cup with a handle.
I think I’ll find a crochet cup cozy meant to fit around the cup … or maybe a knit one. I’ve come to love knitting as much as I love crocheting. I love yarning!
Speaking of crochet … I found a gorgeous pattern for a crochet duster cardigan from the Make & Do Crew website. I’m not going to crochet the sleeves, as I want a long vest for myself for my upcoming trip. The stars seemed to have been in alignment when I found this pattern, as the yarn I got for it was on sale. The best thing? The gauge swatches are pockets!! What’s better than a long pretty handmade vest with pockets?!
My great-niece decided to make her debut early, so not only is she going to be getting a wee cardigan for later, but I’ve frogged the blanket I was already making to make a smaller sweater that she can wear now.
Since the one I already made just need buttons, I’m going to make the smaller one in a different pattern so her mum can choose which one she wants her wee babe to wear. I’ve not met my nephew and his wife, nor have I met my half-sister and her other children yet, but they are already such an important part of my life. One day, I will be able to make the trip across Canada to meet them. Until then, emails and Facebook will be how I get to know them.
Well, that’s about it for today. I’ll try to write more later …
This August, in my community, we have an annual fair. I’ve entered a few times, and have done well. This year, I’m narrowing down my entries to just three. I’ve done the afghan thing, the shawl thing, and the doll thing. This year, I’m doing three doll outfits. One knit, one crocheted and one sewn. Since my stroke, things have been harder for me to understand and do. So, I’m starting slow again.
I have a number of crochet patterns for doll outfits, and the hardest thing is to find one that I love to do, and I haven’t entered before. Knit and sewn clothes are a little harder. These will be new things for me to do and learn.
I think this all started from my recent research into medieval dolls, and how they were made. Heh … this year, I think I’m going to have a 10th birthday party for myself with a dolly theme.
Anyway, expect some fun in the near future, about these dolls!
It has been a while since I wrote anything. Not for the lack of wanting, but for the lack of focus. I’ve been working on making stuff, and going through my yarn stash – and I’ve been lost in the patterns and research!
I’ve found an amazingly cute amigurumi – The Mushroom Guy – which I’ve been working on. Squish (my post-stroke brain) has fallen in love with him, but has had a lot of trouble with parts of the creation. I haven’t even thought about taking a photo yet. But, I will. Soon, I promise.
I’m working, also, on finishing the restoration of Karmig – my friend’s wee panda bear. I’m vexed beyond all beyonds with the thought of not being able to get the white actually white. Right now, it’s a grey/blue colour and not all that soft. However, Himself has come up with a last ditch solution which we will work on this weekend. Either way, it will be soft – if not white – and restuffed, with the little cotton heart with his old stuffing and threads. He will be very snuggly and huggable for my dear, wee nibling.
So, photos upcoming, and happy long weekend thoughts for this Family Day long weekend. ❤
This year is a year of giving for us. 2024 was a brutal year with severe health issues, and causing money issues. Food security, as we learned, is a tough thing to live with, and there are so many in our community that deal with it every single day.
To that end, all my acrylic yarn will be knitted/crocheted into hats, scarves and ear warmers for the homeless in our city. I have a lot of baby yarn too, so we’ve decided to use that for hats, blankets and wee sweaters for the NICU and Maternity ward in our hospital. I do have some that I’m saving to make a full layette set for my nephew’s first born child this spring.
It’s hard, as we are still dealing with health issues, and food security, but it’s better enough that we are giving back.
Today, I’ve also launched my Etsy store, as I have vintage pattern books I’ve scanned to pdf, and want to sell for a little extra cash. I want to make dish cloths and toys to sell as well. This year is going to be busy.
My mum is onboard, which is awesome, as she knits and sews as well. I may even have a few friends who want to do the same thing. I love how our little crafty community is gathering together to help those in need.
Now to figure out where to start … baby stuff or winter stuff? Decisions decisions!
